Ontario M Motorcycle Road Test
Approx. 20 minutes
To earn a Class M motorcycle licence in Ontario, riders must advance through the province's graduated licensing system. The first step—transitioning from an M1 permit to an M2 licence—is evaluated through the M1 Exit road test, which focuses on low-speed handling and core bike control.
Eligibility & Timing
- M1 Holding Period: You must hold your M1 permit for at least 60 days before taking the test.
- Permit Expiry: The test must be passed before your M1 expires (the permit is valid for 90 days total).
What Is Evaluated (6 Core Maneuvers)
The M1 Exit test is conducted in a controlled parking lot setting, testing balance, throttle management, and braking precision:
- U-Turns & Gear Changes: Negotiating a tight curve, shifting smoothly into second gear, and stopping inside a marked box.
- Slow-Speed Slalom: Weaving through staggered cones continuously without knocking them over or putting a foot down.
- Sharp Turns from a Stop: Accelerating into a sharp, low-speed turn while remaining strictly within marked boundary lines.
- Emergency Stopping: Driving up to speed in second gear and executing a sudden, controlled stop past a marker without skidding.
- Emergency Swerve: Riding at speed and rapidly swerving left or right around an obstacle without applying the brakes.
- Curved Stops: Stopping smoothly while leaning through a turn.
Generally available mid-May to mid-October, weather permitting.
